Rose Wylie

Added Note (Oct, 2017): I have been producing a wall drawing, heavily inspired by the loose physicality of this paintings…! It’s been very fun.

I first saw Rose Wylie’s work at Ben River’s exhibition ‘Earth Needs More Magicians’ in a film piece. Secondly at Margate’s Turner Contemporary gallery, I was struck by the scale of the work.

Wylie’s work had an impact on my opinions about my own drawings. I have never shied away from still life drawing, but always away from what might come if I draw from memory and mind. Loosening up was difficult, but freeing and I have created ink, oil and pastel drawings for this project.

I find her style to be based in cathartic-ism above all else. I think I needed to see that, I’ve been falling in and out of love with creating. The freedom of this work has been very inspirational for bringing back some humor into my work. It definitely speaks directly to the part of me that can appreciate doodles more than a print I’ve spent a few weeks trying to get right.
