I traveled to Glasgow on April 26th to enjoy the second weekend of the Glasgow International Arts Festival. The festival incorporates many of the independent galleries in Scotland and institutes such as the GoMA and the Kelvingrove Gallery and Museum, but what makes the festival extra special is the opening of spaces not usually used as platforms for art. Such as the Yon Afro Collective using Govanhill Baths the showcase young women of colours artwork.

I had a small glimpse into what the festival had to offer and still came away with many ideas of how to install work in non-‘white cube’ spaces. I really liked what the oddness of being in an empty swimming pool added to the value of the work of the collective. The tiles created strong reverb from your breath, hushed voice and footsteps. The size of the arched ceiling seemed to amplify everything as well.

Note: The community in the surrounding area had worked on finding the funds to restore two of the swimming pools and will use the larger one as a venue for the arts.
