Setting up for the Show

My work changed drastically from my original proposal, I decided to make a more sculptural installation and took out to ‘interaction’ elements. I did this after drawing up plans for how to display monitors. I also didn’t want to continue from my interim show, as I felt more excited by the prospects of having animations at the centre point of my piece.

It is a basic floor plan, but shows how my plans had changed by the time we were claiming our spaces for the show.

These sketches were done after the initial proposal and were a large part of why the piece changed so much.  As well as it had a context within my work, I think a big reason why my work has a pop-like / cartoonish side to it is I let my drawings influence the 3D elements so much.

The animation below was made on an app called Flipaclip. It combines my earlier interests in the digital drawing (through apps on smartphones) with my interest in animations (think David Hockneys wonderful digital tablet drawings). It is also inspired by the way cartoons animate organic forms (such as water, smoke and earth).

My colour palette for the animation storyboard was inspired by childhood cartoons, mainly Japanese animations. The colour palette I made using photoshop is from ‘One Piece’ a surreal series that is ongoing and over 800 episodes long. I chose it because of its gaudy colours and simple and fast (by today’s standards) animation style. It has a cult like following and is much Americas ‘Simpsons’ in the way it is ingrained into certain parts of the cultural landscape. Lastly, I loved studying the way water, smoke, bubbles and grass were animated. So simple yet utterly convincing.

Here is an attempt at making 3D ‘oozing blobs’ from paint and wire mesh. I didn’t give myself the time or resources to perfect them. I didn’t feel this was where it was meant to be.

Here is my original storyboard for the animations I had planned. Unfortunately, I will have to save this for after the degree show, I had serious altercations to the amount of time I could spend on it this term, but I’m still invested in its potential.
