Jayson Musson – ‘Art Thoughts’ at first seemed like re-appropriated videos from the internet, used direct address, rap music and cheesy graphics, sarcasm
Jacolby Satterwhite – Music again feels like it’s trying to portray that ‘cool gang internet’ grimy thing. I think that internet culture is undesirable and dark to the mainstream, so it’s almost punk – also good music throughout video;
Thoughts during exhibition; lots of ‘bad’ CGI, I could combine my unreal paradise idea with the tropical leaves (like in Harun Farocki’s piece ‘Parallel I-IV’) and 3D virtual Reality. Our constructs in our minds of how there is an ultimate ‘better life’ / ‘ultimate happiness’. I used to think a lot like this, but now am more interested in the visuals that these ideals convey in my mind. Especially living in a mild weathered western country. The memory of my parents always being dissatisfied with living situations. I Could start with simple drawings and collages. For the sound I could look into archival sound sampling. Like Monster Rally, Lemon Jelly. Also one of my tutors Barby used interesting sound bites in her archival workshop. Could even be an installation.
Jon Rafman had a series of prints at the show. ‘Monet Economy Class’ I liked. Digital landscape printed out.
Douglas Coupland – ‘Deep Face’ – really nice detail. – b&w portraits with graphics, bright squares, stripes , vibrant colours over the top.
Alex Ruthner, reminds me of painting matt from uni
Eva and Franco Mattes ‘My Generation’ video collage on a broken computer, humorous, low quality, home video
Camille Henrot ‘Grosse Fatigue’ Hand playing with orange fruit on an orange background, the windows poping up with different movies, like how we take in and read information on screen. Poet-like rap piece over the top, about existence and evolution. The video includes a lot of archival reference (by doing so a reference to archiving itself) in museums, lots of artifacts. Birdman. Explores anthropological pursuits.
Exhibition has lots of screens, semi-installations, rooms with films and digital wall pieces ect.
Upstairs : interactive pieces, tablets, digital
Interactive old microsoft ware piece , dark suicide page ‘ http://www.mouchette.org/ ‘ – Martine Neddam, Reminiscent in technology, easy to navigate when you had it before, very different to more developed, intuitive programming.
Rafaal Lozano-Hemmer ‘Surface Tension’ plasma screen and computerised
