The Fox

A Short Film by Martha Bebe Clark

An experimental short film investigating the relationship between hidden narratives and the subconscious. We are limited to an extremely narrow stream of information from our surroundings due to our senses, yet we take in so much subconsciously. I wanted to reflect that by using an underlying narrative of an anonymous figure and playfully distorting symbols and repetitive imagery inspired by a traditional folk song ‘The Fox Went Out’. I have created the soundtrack by disjointing the notes of this traditional folk song. By using the lyrics as a basis for my narrative, I have a makeshift platform in which to explore space and obscuring within the film. I wanted to explore our idea of reality and how obscure it can be, by distorting and abstracting a preconceived story. These lyrical patterns have inspired the visual rhythm and repetition of the piece.

‘Fox went out on a chilly night,

he prayed to the moon to give him light.

He’d many a mile to that night,

before he reached the town.’
