An installation/Film By Martha Bebe Clark

Paradise is in a Postcard / Paradise is in a Pot

A non-linear narrative film with playful cynicism on the idea of a tropical paradise exploring culture, landscape and desire. Observing the thin line between oddity and the banal, whilst playing with clear/simple imagery. The idea of being able to see the construction of the piece interested me, I want to expose the sentiment that the grass is greener on the other side.

The sounds used are distorted soundtracks from 50’s movies that portray false images of other countries, they play into stereotypes that fed western imperialism. This is mixed with a strange modern day commercial for holidaying in Hawaii. Also recordings of the paper costume.

Using postcards to inspire the setting and using stock movies into the film, the colours are the most important. To portray a sense of whimsy and nostalgia.  I have been playing with the idea of someone immersing themselves into a false reality where the connections between culture and landscape is mixed and confused. The final piece is a culmination of the different materials/mediums I’ve been using for the whole project.
